How Prayer Times Work

Islamic prayer times are astronomical events, not fixed clock times. Fajr begins when the sky starts to lighten before sunrise (true dawn). Dhuhr starts when the sun crosses the meridian. Asr begins when the shadow of a standing object equals its height plus the midday shadow. Maghrib begins at sunset. Isha begins when twilight disappears.

Different calculation methods use slightly different twilight angles for Fajr and Isha, which is why apps can show times that differ by a few minutes. For the UAE, the official method is IACAD (18.2°/18.2°). For the rest of the world, the most common methods are the Muslim World League, Umm al-Qura (Saudi Arabia), Egyptian Authority, and ISNA (North America).

Methodology

All calculations on Dhikr use the AlAdhan API, an open-source astronomical prayer-time service. For the UAE, we force method=16 (IACAD); users can change methods via the full prayer tool. See the methodology page for full calculation details.
